Moyola Park overcame local rivals Wakehurst with relative ease to bounce back after last week’s defeat to Newbuildings.

Moyola had the first chance in the second minute when a cross from Gray was held by Maybin in the visitor’s goal. A minute later a ball over the top found Dowie and he shot straight at Maybin. With eight minutes on the clock a free kick from Harris to Paul was headed clear by McCartney. In the 11th minute a poor clearance across goal from the Wakehurst defence found Gray and he shot straight at Maybin.

With nearly twenty minutes gone Moyola gave the ball away at the back but McCaughern shot wide for the visitors. In the 23rd minute a free kick from McAllister dropped to the unmarked Dowie and he shot straight at Maybin. Three minutes later Dowie found Gray and he fired his shot just wide. The home side opened the scoring in the 28th minute when a corner on the left from McNamee found the unmarked McIlhatton and headed powerfully past Maybin for his fourth goal of the season. With ten minutes left to half time Young for the visitors shot wide and Moyola doubled their lead in the 38th minute when Harris was fouled in the box after a pass from Gray and Dowie fired in from the penalty spot.

Wakehurst made a substitution at half time with Elliot replacing Ross. With four minutes gone in the second half a cross from Gray dropped to McQuillan at the edge of the box and scored with a half volley into the bottom corner to make the score 3-0. Two minutes later the impressive McIlhatton saw his shot saved by Maybin. With ten minutes gone in the second half McCartney saw his free kick saved by Farniok and the same player had his free kick deflected out for a corner six minutes later. Dowie headed wide in the 63rd minute following a cross by McAllister and the home side made their first change three minutes later with Gregg replacing Gray. Moyola made the game safe in the 69th minute when a corner by McNamee was missed by Maybin and McCartney unfortunately put the ball into his own goal. In the 73rd minute McCaughern had a header saved by Farniok and three minutes later McIlhatton shot straight at Maybin. Wakehurst grabbed a consolation goal in the 77th minute when McAllister was adjudged to have made a foul in the box and McClelland scored the resulting penalty. The visitors were reduced to ten men in the 78th minute when Young went off injured and Paul Muir having made his three substitutions. In the 81st minute substitute Gregg had his shot saved by Maybin and a minute later at the other end McKenna fired wide for the visitors. Moyola made their second change in the 83rd minute with Taggart replacing McNamee. With three minutes left the final chance fell to McAllister following a corner by Gregg, however he headed wide. Moyola made the final change in the 88th minute with Waddell replacing McIlhatton.

This was a great all round performance from the home side with McIlhatton especially impressive in midfield and Moyola Park would like to thank Matthew Doey from the Old Town Chippy, Castledawson for sponsoring the match ball for today’s game.
